Murphy lauds Klopp for making one ‘crucial’ decision against Man Utd

Danny Murphy has praised Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp for making a “crucial” tactical change that allowed his side to get back into the game against Manchester United on Sunday.

Liverpool looked flat throughout the first half, which they ended a goal down after Marcus Rashford’s strike was allowed to stand following an earlier challenge on Divock Origi that was referred to VAR.

In the second half, however, the Reds upped the tempo and the introductions of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and goalscorer Adam Lallana – as well as a change in formation – allowed the visitors back into the game.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Murphy hailed Klopp for his tactics in the second half, saying: “Liverpool went to a 4-2-3-1 and had Jordan Henderson pinning back Ashley Young. It gave Liverpool more control and possession and the ability to wear United down.

“Klopp deserves credit for the substitutions as well. [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain did alright when he came on as well. [Naby] Keita started probing when he came on and of course, Adam Lallana got the goal.

“Liverpool started badly and United were the reason for that. United’s tactics were good and the energy was good and so was the crowd. That’s as good as I’ve seen United for a long time.”

Murphy added that Liverpool’s persistence in trying to find an equaliser that also paid off in the end.

The pundit said: “Liverpool grew into the game and the tactical change from Jurgen Klopp was crucial because United were dominant in that first half.

“In the end Liverpool tired United out through persistence and patience. It was a good second-half performance from Liverpool.”

Liverpool face Genk in Belgium on Wednesday in the Champions League before hosting Tottenham at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.
