Next Saiz: Orta made an unforgivable Leeds mistake not signing £27m “immense talent” – opinion

One of Leeds United’s reported summer targets continues to impress this season, which poses the question, did they make a mistake not signing him? It certainly seems so…

What was the word?

Back in September, the Yorkshire giants were linked with a move for Levante midfielder Jose Campana, who was once on the books of Crystal Palace, by radio station Onda Cero.

Whilst El Desmarque claim Leeds submitted a €15m (£13.5m) bid a month later, which fell short of their initial valuation of €30m (£27m).

One that got away?

Well, since the closure of the summer window, Campana has continued to thrive in the Spanish top-flight by becoming one of the Frogs’ most influential players.

In six league starts, the 27-year-old has provided a goal and an assist whilst also averaging 3.2 dribbles, 1.7 interceptions, 1.5 key passes, 1.3 shots and 1.2 tackles per game, via WhoScored.

That’s everything you could ever ask for in an industrious box-to-box midfielder, if not more. It’s no wonder he was once tipped for stardom by former Blackpool and Palace boss Ian Holloway.

“I think Campana’s a fantastic player, his maturity is unbelievable, and the way he plays the game is the way I believe it should be played. He’s going to be a great star of the future and the present.”

The Spaniard played just six times in the Premier League and provided two assists for the Eagles before being sold to Sampdoria back in 2014.

La Liga expert Graham Hunter once dubbed him an “immense talent” and it now seems like Orta made one massive gaffe by not tapping him up when he could’ve.

United’s midfield has been an Achilles heel in recent matches with Kalvin Phillips out through injury, evidently, Campana has that tough-tackling side to his game as well as shades of Samuel Saiz.

That colossal presence in the heart of the pitch is something Marcelo Bielsa could’ve done with this season, especially with Adam Forshaw still recovering from his long-term injury and with Pablo Hernandez struggling in the top-flight.

It’s early days, but this was one unforgivable decision by Orta and co.

AND in other news, Bielsa may forever regret not signing two-time Leeds target for £20m…
