“One of the best” – Leeds must sign 6’6 colossus, will take Bielsa fave under his wing – opinion

Leeds United have hit a wall in their returning Premier League campaign after suffering back-to-back 4-1 defeats to Leicester and Crystal Palace. Their dip in form now sees them slide to 14th in the Premier League table with the joint highest amount of goals conceded.

Many fingers have been pointed over why this is, with Marcelo Bielsa’s stubbornness over formations taking the brunt. However, a number of things need tweaking if the Whites are going to survive this season. Patrick Bamford needs more help in attack and the Leeds defence must sharpen up or the ship will continue to take on water, which they cannot afford to do.

Leeds must move for Fraser Forster

After falling out of favour at St Mary’s, Fraser Forster is now on several club’s radars amid a potential transfer next summer. The 6 ft 6 colossus spent last season on loan with Celtic, but a permanent move didn’t come to fruition. Now, the clock is ticking and other elite teams are circling the Southampton titan, who will be out of contract in 2022.

Once he enters the final 12 months of his current terms, the Saints may start to panic and offer him up for a cut price, one that a club like Leeds can afford. Certainly, signing the 32-year-old England international would bring an abundance of experience to Bielsa’s defence and will help see Illan Meslier progress.

The 20-year-old has had some solid games in the net this season, but he has also struggled. The expertise of a player like Forster would help build both Meslier’s skills and confidence. Noel Whelan certainly believes he would be a strong addition to the team and wants to see Leeds move for the shot-stopper in January.

“A more experienced goalkeeper may be able to help Meslier along the way as well,” the pundit told Football Insider. “It would take a bit of pressure off him because beforehand, in the Championship, he was well protected but it is very difficult to do that in the Premier League because every team has star men that can hurt you.

“Fraser Forster’s name has been mentioned, I would like to see him there but he is on massive money at Southampton.”

Indeed, the goalkeeper dubbed “one of the best in the game” by Johan Mjallby is currently earning an eye-watering £70,000 per week, which could be a deal-breaker for Leeds. Bamford is currently the Whites’ top earner, on £35,000 per week. It’s safe to say that Forster would have to consider a pay cut if he wanted to join the Elland Road outfit, but he could become a club icon if he makes the move.
