Palace should forget “big kid in the playground” & swoop for 12-assist star in January – opinion

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

According to an exclusive report from The Scottish Sun, Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard is on Crystal Palace’s radar as a potential January target for the south Londoners.

Additionally, the report states that Rangers hitman Alfredo Morelos is also potentially wanted by the Eagles, with Roy Hodgson said to be interested in the Colombian.

Both men have been in exquisite form so far this term for their respective clubs.

Edouard has netted 12 goals in all competitions while also registering 12 assists, showcasing that he can create as well as find the back of the net himself.

In Morelos’ case, the Rangers No.20 is far less creative with only seven assists to his name, although he is unquestionably more focused on putting the ball past the goalkeeper – the 23-year-old has 22 goals in just 26 appearances this term.

So, how do Palace choose between the two?

Alfredo Morelos vs Odsonne Edouard - Palace should forget "big kid in the playground" & swoop for 12-assist star in January - opinion

Well, they should opt for Edouard over Morelos – who was recently described as a “big kid in the playground” by Steven Gerrard – purely because of their poor chance creation.

If you were to look at the xG Premier League table (for expected goals) this term, only Steve Bruce’s Newcastle are deemed less creative than Hodgson’s side, who have an xG rating of 11.96 – this is only 1.96 above the ten goals they have actually scored in 12 Premier League games.

Additionally, the Eagles have created the least big chances in England’s top-flight, carving out just eight golden opportunities to score in 12 league outings – Palace are four big chances behind Norwich, who are 19th in this specific table with 12 big chances created.

So, on this basis, having someone to set chances up seems just as big an issue as having someone to actually put the ball in the back of the net.

It could be argued that, if Morelos was signed, he may struggle for goals with such little service.

On the other hand, it seems as if Edouard can create chances and still have an impact when not scoring them himself – it is for this reason that Palace should choose the Frenchman over Morelos.
