An on-loan Leeds defender will soon be the subject of an approach from Liverpool, with Arsenal also keen, while Marcelo Bielsa’s side are on the trail of a West Ham midfielder, according to Wednesday’s Paper Talk.
ARSENAL JOIN LIVERPOOL, MAN UTD IN HUNT FOR BEN WHITE
Arsenal have joined Manchester United and Leicester in the hunt to sign impressive Leeds loan defender Ben White, according to a report.
However, the quartet could be beaten to the punch by Liverpool, who are reported to be preparing a firm offer of £20million to sign the 22-year-old defender, according to The Sun.
Relative-unknown White joined Leeds on a season-long loan deal from Brighton last summer and has been been an absolute revelation for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, playing every single minute of their Championship season for the top-of-the-table Yorkshiremen.
And while Leeds will no doubt be keen to sign the defender on a permanent basis come the end of the season and should they secure promotion, it’s widely reported they could be beaten to the punch with a plethora of established Premier League sides also in the hunt to sign him.
Rated at around £25million by Brighton, the Seagulls have already stated their intentions to welcome the player – who has yet to make his league debut for the club – into their ranks next season.
But it seems they will have a hard time retaining the defender’s services should a big bid come in for the defender in the summer, with Arsenal adding their names to his list of suitors following the two sides’ FA Cup third-round meeting earlier this year.
Arsenal are also keen to pay the £25m asking price for another on-loan defender in the shape of Manchester United man Chris Smalling, who has this season starred for Roma.
Liverpool, however, reportedly lead the charge and are ready to make a firm bid to sign the defender in an attempt to beat their rivals to the punch, with boss Jurgen Klopp ready to let experienced defender Dejan Lovren move on this summer.
White, who has also been used in a holding midfield role this season during Kalvin Phillips’ occasional absences, has also been watched by Leicester, Man Utd and Chelsea with his calmness on the ball, reading of the game, tackling and passing ability earning him a tag as a future England international.
Wherever he ends up, and regardless of their fate, it seems Brighton will face a hard time retaining his services ahead of the 2020/21 season.
