Pundit urges Dele Alli to quit Tottenham over Mourinho treatment

Jermaine Jenas believes Dele Alli should consider a future away from Tottenham due to his failing relationship with boss Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho’s appointment last November initially seemed to revive Alli’s fortunes following a period of lacklustre displays.

The England man netted five times in seven matches between November and early December, showing that his eye for goal was still sharp.

It seemed the perfect response after Mourinho had joked that the player he’d been watching struggle previously must have been Alli’s brother.

“I have already spoken with him and I asked him if he was Dele or Dele’s brother,” Mourinho said at the time.

“He told me he was Dele. ‘OK,’ I said. ‘Play like Dele’.”

But Alli managed to score just three more times after his initial flurry under Mourinho and he appeared to lose the Portuguese coach’s confidence.

The hints of a riff were further exposed during the recent Amazon Prime fly on the wall documentary ‘All Or Nothing‘.

Their relationship seems to have deteriorated further this season. Alli was taken off at half-time in the opening 1-0 home defeat by Everton. He didn’t play any part in the 5-2 win at Southampton and was also hooked after an hour in Tottenham’s Europa League win at Shkendija on Thursday night.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport Jenas believes Mourinho’s past fallouts with players doesn’t bode well for Alli’s future.

The pundit and former Spurs star said: “Is there clear conversations between Dele and the manager as to what do you want me to do?

“Tell me exactly how you want me to perform. Because when you came into the football club and you put your arm around me and you showed me some love and we had all the banter about Dele’s brother and all this there were big smiles on everyone’s faces.

“I went in and banged in like five goals in seven games.

“How do you go from that to just completely casting a young 24-year-old aside who is maybe struggling for form?

“But he’s had previous with young players like (Marcus) Rashford, like Luke Shaw and so forth.

“This doesn’t sit right with me the way he’s been treated even if he’s not performing at the level which he should be. Which is why if I was Dele I’d be looking to move on.”

PSG a possible option for Alli

If Alli’s future doesn’t lie at Spurs, where could he go?

Some reports last weekend suggested PSG had opened talks about a possible swoop.

The Telegraph noted that the French champions have been interested in the attacking midfielder for some time.

However, more recent reports suggest the French champions have now retracted their interest.

Mourinho insisted before Thursday night’s Europa League clash that there would still be “opportunities” for Alli to impress.

But playing away in North Macedonia and then getting substituted after 60 minutes was hardly cause for optimism.

And football.london noted that Mourinho wasn’t pleased with Alli’s lack of pressing in that game, blasting him with a touchline tirade at one point.
