Reguilon in shock revelation over Spurs move; talks up ‘great’ Mourinho

Sergio Reguilon has conceded that leaving Real Madrid for Tottenham “wasn’t up to me” – but admits that life under Jose Mourinho has been to his liking.

Reguilon moved to Spurs in the recent transfer window and has so far proved an excellent fit in the side.

He has assisted three goals in eight games in all competitions, a firm contributor to his club’s recent strong run.

The 23-year-old has a buy-back clause linked to Madrid in his contract. Indeed, he has admitted that the “possibility exists” that he could one day return to his “home”.

Much has been written about Reguilon’s move to Spurs, including this report of how a fracas with a Real teammate prompted his departure.

Indeed, Reguilon has commented quite a lot about his summer switch. He was also the subject of interest from Manchester United. However, their unwillingness to negotiate a buy-back clause ended talk of a move to Old Trafford.

Now an established member of Mourinho’s side, Reguilon has suggested he had little say over his move to north London.

Speaking to Onda Cero, relayed by Libertad Digital, he said: “I’m not in Madrid because it’s something that wasn’t up to me. My conscience is very clear. You can’t be frustrated about decisions you don’t get to make. I didn’t get to speak with [Zinedine] Zidane.”

Indeed, Zidane’s loss has been very much Mourinho’s gain.

Speaking about life under the Portuguese coach, Reguilon admits he has been pleasantly surprised.

“He is a great person and wins a lot in the short term,” Reguilon said via Sport Witness. “Jose Mourinho has surprised me in a good way. He has many good things about him.

That being said, he hasn’t forgotten his childhood club, Real Madrid, adding: “They’ve given me everything and I will always have a very special affection for them.”

Reguilon notices Bale change

Reguilon and Gareth Bale have both made an impact since joining Tottenham from Madrid. The latter had fallen out of favour under Zidane in recent years, and much was made of his apparent preference for playing golf compared to playing for the La Liga giants.

Now, Bale is back enjoying his football at Spurs. He scored his first goal since returning in a win over Brighton at the weekend.

And Reguilon says his teammate is happier to be back in the Premier League.

“He seems different to me,” Reguilon added. “The language is everything for him.

“He speaks Spanish well, it’s not bad, a bit like me in English, but communication, the habits, mean he’s happier in England. I have no idea if he’ll return (to Madrid).”
