Reliable source offers reality check on Man Utd pursuit of AC Milan star

Manchester United do not have an advanced interest in AC Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, who is a target for several clubs, according to one journalist.

Recent reports have claimed that the Turkey international is on United’s radar, amid his contractual uncertainty.

The 26-year-old has less than a year left on his deal, with the Red Devils reportedly keen to offer him a lucrative salary.

That contract would stretch significantly beyond what he earns in Milan and he would add to United’s midfield ranks.

However, reporter Fabrizio Romano claims that United do not, as yet, hold a serious interest in Calhanoglu.

What’s more, there are reportedly many clubs who are keen on signing the midfielder on a free transfer next summer. But his overarching desire is to sit down with Milan and receive clarification on his immediate future.

Earlier speculation claimed that the player wants to extend his association with Milan. However, negotiations are so far at an impasse.

As such, further discussions will prove crucial in Calhanoglu and his club coming to a final decision.

Calhanoglu has proved a fantastic addition to Milan since his arrival in 2017. Indeed, following head coach Paulo Fonseca taking over in October last year, the midfielder has been a regular feature.

As such, he reportedly feels his continued vital role in proceedings means he should earn an extension from his club.

But while Milan are supposedly willing to offer €3million (£2.7million), Calhanoglu wants more.

United added to their plethora of midfield ranks in the recent transfer window by bringing in Donny van de Beek.

The Dutchman has struggled to make an impact so far, but doubts remain over Paul Pogba’s future at Old Trafford.

Milan in frequent Dalot talks

Meanwhile, Milan are reportedly in constant contact with United about a permanent deal for Diogo Dalot.

The right-back moved to Italy on loan in the recent transfer window having fallen down the Old Trafford pecking order.

However, Milan will have to earn Champions League qualification for next season to be able to afford a long-term deal.
