Rio Ferdinand purrs over fearsome Liverpool as they seal CL glory

Rio Ferdinand admitted Liverpool fully deserve Champions League glory and says their success in the Wanda Metropolitano will be “talked about for years to come”.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi earned the Reds a sixth European crown with a 2-0 win over Tottenham for their first trophy under Jurgen Klopp. You can read how we rated and slated the players here.

While Liverpool did not put in a vintage display, former Manchester United star Ferdinand – himself a Champions League winner in 2008 – insists no-one connected with the Reds will care a jot.

“This team is going to be a feared team in Europe. Nobody wants to pull this team out the hat or play at Anfield,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“Now there’s a fear, they’ve produced big results. This performance won’t be talked about for years to come – we didn’t play well against Chelsea in 2008 but I couldn’t care less.

“These boys deserve it. I think they will get stronger from this.”

That was a view shared by fellow pundit Glenn Hoddle, although he felt the better team lost on the night.

“Jurgen Klopp has built this team, he’s obviously been given good support,” he said. “But it’s the way Liverpool play – the tempo they play at, the system they play, it suits them.

“He knows what he wants from the players, they have clarity when they go out there.”

Hoddle continued: “That said, Spurs were the better. The goalkeeper [Alisson Becker] was their best player.

Michael Owen claimed Liverpool will now be viewed as a ‘formidable’ side and can challenge for major silverware in the years to come.

“Who cares whether they played well or poorly? This team is in an unbelievable cycle right now and they have to win trophies, so why not start with the big one,” Owen stated.

“They have the tools now to go deep into every tournament and they really are a formidable side.”
