Mohamed Salah says he is determined to carry on finding the back of the net after matching Steven Gerrard’s record for Liverpool goals in the Champions League.
Salah notched his 21st strike in the competition during the Reds’ 5-0 win over Atalanta on Tuesday. The Egyptian now sits level with club icon Gerrard for that statistic.
However, despite feeling “happy” to have matched the former captain, Salah says he has his sights set on more goals.
“I am happy to have equalled Gerrard’s record, he is a Liverpool legend,” Salah said on Sky Sports (via Goal).
“It’s an honour for me, but my job is to score to help the team and win games most importantly.”
Salah recently hit the 100-goal mark overall for Liverpool and is close to reaching three figures in the Premier League.
His latest strike came as the Reds thrashed Atalanta, who – as Salah says – helped his team going forward with their aggressive style of play.
“Unlocking the game immediately gave us confidence and the possibility of creating more chances. Atalanta’s game helped us, but it also helps them.
“They proved it last year, they are a team that scores a lot and also concedes a lot. They are a strong team, that’s for sure. They’ll do well again this year.”
However, Liverpool’s front three were all on song, with Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane also on the scoresheet.
Jota rightly stole the fair share of the limelight, though, with his first hat-trick for his new club. Indeed, his three goals took his tally to seven in his opening 10 games.
Alisson offers reminder about Firmino
With Salah, Jota and Mane forming a front three on Tuesday, that meant Roberto Firmino had to make way.
Indeed, the Brazilian’s place in the team looks under threat amid Jota’s continued hot streak.
However, Firmino’s compatriot Alisson has offered a reminder about why Liverpool will still rely on the attacker.
