Shi could walk Wolves into a £27.5m nightmare with colossus who once silenced Semedo – opinion

Wolverhampton Wanderers are starting to make some moves in the transfer window but one reported decision could leave Nuno Santo with another transfer catastrophe…

What’s the word?

According to AS, the Midlands outfit have been monitoring the situation surrounding Athletic Bilbao centre-back Unai Nunez with the Wolves boss really liking the player.

They claim that several other Premier League teams are also keen, including Arsenal and West Ham but no side is yet to be convinced by the 23-year-old’s €30m (£27.5m) release clause.

Nunez has rejected three approaches from the La Liga outfit over a new contract and has demanded to be loaned out.

Another defensive flop?

A Spanish defender who can’t break into the first-team XI? This very much sounds like Jesus Vallejo, who was brought in last summer before being sent back to Real Madrid early after just one Premier League start.

Nunez was only able to play 20 times in the Spanish top-flight last season where he averaged a disappointing 0.7 tackles per game, via WhoScored.

Although he was part of the starting lineup for clean sheets against both Madrid and Barcelona – Bilbao defeated the Catalan giants 1-0 with the 23-year-old silencing the likes of Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembele and even incoming Molineux signing Nelson Semedo.

The Spaniard is very much in the mould of Conor Coady having averaged an 83.4% passing success rate over the course of his career but the Wolf Pack skipper is some way clear defensively, as seen by the following chart.

As the ‘quarter-back’ of this Wolves outfit, Coady’s diagonal balls into the final third are a crucial cog to everything coming together, so there’s no chance Nunez earns that spot and as he’s defensively weaker than Romain Saiss (1.7 tackles per game last season) and Willy Boly (5.5 aerial duels won per game this season), he’s unlikely to start either side of the England international either.

Jeff Shi could walk his club into a £27.5m disaster if he goes ahead with this move and after the nightmare surrounding Vallejo, it’s just not worth it.

AND in other news, Wolves now learning the negatives of aligning with Jorge Mendes…
