Southgate sure of Kane priorities amid Rooney record discussion

England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed Harry Kane is totally focused on team success despite backing him to break an individual record.

The Three Lions return to action on Sunday as they take on number one ranked side Belgium in UEFA Nations League action.

Tottenham hitman Harry Kane is set to lead the line once more, and will aim to translate his remarkable Premier League form into the international arena.

The 27-year-old was rested for Thursday’s friendly in order to keep him fresh for Sunday, where he will make his 50th appearance for England and look to add to his 32-goal haul.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Southgate said of his talismanic striker: “In terms of what’s possible, I think the goalscoring record is the really interesting one because his strike rate for us is quite phenomenal,” Southgate said, referring to Wayne Rooney’s 53-goal tally.

“He’s obviously got time on his side to crack on and chase Wayne’s record, which would be a remarkable feat in itself.

“When you look at Sir Bobby (Charlton), Gary Lineker, Wayne and if Harry can get into that sort of list, then it’s a fantastic personal achievement.

“But I know from his perspective whilst the personal achievement is something he’s driven towards, he’s all about the team winning now.

“He’s been to a World Cup, won the Golden Boot, but in the end you want to win as a team and he’s totally focused on that and the team having success.

“He would want in the next few years to be able to look back on the team having achieved, as well as getting some of those personal milestones.”

Rice condemns Mount backlash

Meanwhile, West Ham and England midfielder Declan Rice has described the criticism Mason Mount continues to recieve on social media as “very harsh”.

The Chelsea star often comes in for criticism when England squads and team selections are announced, and Rice feels the direct comparisons between Mount and Jack Grealish are unjustified.

“We don’t speak about it but I think it’s very harsh,” Rice replied when asked about the negative social media surrounding Mount.

“I witness it here, when I come to train here and I have trained with him since I was a kid.

“So I know what his mentality is like, I know how hard-working and how driven he is and it is no surprise you know that Gareth picks him, Frank (Lampard) picks him.

“I think if you give every Premier League manager the chance to pick him, they pick him as well because if you see day in day out what he gives to the team as an individual, he’s a top talent – so I think that the criticism is very harsh.”

“I think if you look at Jack and you look at Mason, obviously there’s always going to be comparisons but they pretty much play in two different parts of the pitch.

“Mason now at Chelsea is playing as an attacking number eight and Jack is playing off the left.

“I think you could see the other night that they can both play in the same team for sure and they’re both great players that I think we should be valuing.

“For the nation and for me as someone who gets to play with these players we’re lucky that we get to play with such talents.”
