Manchester United are struggling to raise further transfer funds due to the wage demands of their for-sale fringe players, according to a report.
United’s only addition so far in the transfer window is Donny van de Beek, who signed for £38.5million last week.
The Red Devils took out a £140million loan earlier this year to help them through the coronavirus crisis. The financial impacts of the pandemic, have, however, restricted the club’s spending capacity.
Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously admitted uncertainty about the funds he would have to revamp his squad.
The Norwegian believes selling players on the periphery of his squad is a guaranteed way to raise such money, but ESPN claim United are having problems offloading such talent.
Among the players United are willing to listen to offers for are defender Phil Jones and goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
However, several clubs have reportedly retracted their interest in the players due to their salaries at Old Trafford.
As such, United bosses including Ed Woodward have reportedly urged the players to accept pay cuts in order to seal moves away. Otherwise, they could agree a pay-off with the club, similar to how Alexis Sanchez left for Inter Milan.
As well as Jones and Romero, Andreas Pereira and Chris Smalling also face uncertain futures. Indeed, midfielder Pereira has fallen further down the pecking order after Van de Beek’s arrival.
Smalling, meanwhile, is a target for Roma, though the Italian side have balked at his wage demands.
Romero has now slipped to third choice between the sticks following Dean Henderson‘s return from Sheffield United.
Jones, meanwhile, has three years left on the contract extension he signed last year.
REPORTED MAN UTD BID FOR URUGUAY STAR
Elsewhere, reports claim United have submitted a bid for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.
Solskjaer is after another centre-back to become the new partner alongside Harry Maguire.
Several players have previously been linked, but the latest speculation claims the Red Devils are stepping up interest in Uruguay international Gimenez.
