Torreira details key factor that ‘cost’ him reaching heights at Arsenal

Lucas Torreira says his inability to successfully break the language barrier played a major role in his decision to leave Arsenal recently.

The Uruguayan left the Gunners for Atletico Madrid on a loan deal on deadline day in October.

The transfer, sealed after he made 89 appearances for Arsenal, came after two years in north London.

Torreira previously revealed how his second season with the Gunners was “not good” for him “at all”.

Speaking more recently to AS, he further explained the reasons for making the move across Europe.

Asked if Atletico’s atmosphere played a part, the 24-year-old said (via the Daily Mirror): “This affects me a lot.

“I have two Uruguayan colleagues, a Uruguayan teacher, an Argentine coaching staff and language is an important factor, too.

“I was in England for two years and that issue cost me, beyond that I was taking classes.

“I know that I came to Atletico Madrid, a club with a lot of hierarchy that fights important things, that also influenced this decision I made.”

Torreira also revealed with his earlier comments a previously-concealed dream to sign for Atletico.

He said: “My wish and my dream has always been to be able to reach Atletico Madrid.

“It’s a goal I’ve set myself since I came to Italy when I was 17. And I’m not saying it because I’m here now, but I’ve never been encouraged to say it before because you know that maybe at some point you can’t get to give that dream.

“But today, really, when I was 24, I can tell. I have achieved this goal.”

Torreira scored four goals and assisted six others in his time with Arsenal.
