Tottenham and Mourinho on alert, as Atletico Madrid hitman offers to move on

Diego Costa has admitted he will not “drain” Atletico Madrid and could leave the LaLiga side before the transfer window closes next week.

Since his return from Chelsea Costa has struggled for form at the Wanda Metropolitano. He scored just five goals in 30 appearances across all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side last term.

The 31-year-old did score in Atletico’s 6-1 demolition of Granada on Sunday – a game in which Luis Suarez made his debut.

Suarez, who has just arrived from Barcelona, scored twice, and it may well be the Uruguayan who pushes Costa down the pecking order.

Joao Felix is expected to be Suarez’s first choice strike partner and Marca’s front page on Monday suggest his future is up in the air.

After the win over Granada, the striker spoke candidly about his future.

“I have let the club decide my future. At no time did I want to fight to be a weight in here, on the contrary,” Costa told Movistar LaLiga.

“I have made it very clear to the club. I was listening that if they were going to sell me, if there was a possibility of yielding, I would leave, if they wanted the termination to go free, I would also accept it.

“I spoke with the club, with the coach and I made it very clear what was happening, that if I am, I will fight and continue fighting, and if the injuries respect me. I will be there, but if they see the possibility of leaving, and going, well I’m available.”

Costa, who fired Atletico to the La Liga title in 2014, has been linked with a move away from the club.

Tottenham were mentioned as suitors for the forward last month. The Daily Star claimed Spurs had been offered Costa, who has just 12 months remaining on his contract.

Jose Mourinho is believed to be interested in another centre- forward, and he may well fancy a reunion with Costa.

In July West Ham were reportedly eyeing a move for Costa, with Everton and Wolves also keen.

The report in the Daily Mirror claimed that the Hammers were examining all options.

Costa, despite the lack of clarity of his future, was in high spirits and joked about Suarez’s arrival.

“He is very good, one of us can do the fighting and the other can do the biting,” Costa said.

“We are very lucky to have Luis, I don’t understand how Barca could have let him leave,” Costa said.

“He’s going to help us with lots of goals as well as his warrior spirit and his hunger to win trophies. I hope he can help us win another trophy for our fans, but we need to take each game as it comes.”
