Tottenham have opened negotiations with Flamengo over their midfielder Gerson, according to reports.
The 22-year-old was among the starters for the Brazilian side as they fell to defeat to Liverpool in the Club World Cup final on Saturday.
It concluded a busy year for the attacking midfielder, who has scored twice in 34 appearances for Flamengo since joining them in July.
His previous adventure in European football did not go to plan, as he was only ever a fringe player at Roma before finding a bit more joy on loan at Fiorentina.
He was sold by the Italians to Flamengo at the end of last season, becoming the most expensive Brazilian to ever be signed by a club in his homeland.
But according to 90min, he could be in line for a return to Europe, as Jose Mourinho is considering taking him to Tottenham.
It is claimed that Tottenham are in talks with Flamengo over a potential deal for the left-footed player, whom they would allow to stay in Brazil until the start of the next Premier League season if they were able to sign him in January.
However, Mourinho has said that he does not need to sign new players in January – which will be his first transfer window as Spurs boss and therefore his first opportunity to shape the squad to his liking.
He told Sky Sports: “I’m relaxed because I got this club exactly as I was expecting.
“I expect to be asked about Daniel Levy saying we don’t plan to spend a lot, and people to ask if I’m upset.
“Will that upset me? No. I knew it, he told me! Everything was crystal clear, no secrets in any of the club’s plans, and this makes me happy.
“I don’t like being at a club and being surprised by things. Here there are no surprises.
“Would I prefer to have £300m in January? I wouldn’t. In January I don’t need players.”
Meanwhile, there is uncertainty over the future of an attacking midfielder already at the club, as Giovani Lo Celso’s loan could be bought out earlier than expected despite a lack of action under Mourinho. Read the fully story here.
