Tottenham devise plan as £20m, long-term winger target snubs new deal

Tottenham are on alert after long-term Leicester target Demarai Gray turned down the offer of a new contract, according to a report.

Spurs failed with a bid for the England Under-21 international in 2017, when he opted to sign a new contract.

However Football Insider claims that, three years on, he has grown unhappy with his role in Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Gray played in Leicester’s Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday. But he has failed to make the squad for either of the Foxes’ Premier League games so far this term.

As such, he has reportedly rejected the offer of a new contract, with his current terms expiring next summer. That makes his exit from the King Power Stadium in the coming months “inevitable”.

What’s more, his situation is likely to alert Tottenham, Football Insider adds, with boss Jose Mourinho as much an admirer of winger Gray as predecessor Mauricio Pochettino was.

Spurs have also reportedly thought about how they would approach a move for Gray, who Leicester value at £20million.

At that price, they are likely to either wait for his price to fall – with Leicester likely to want to recoup a fee while they still can – or sign him on a free transfer next summer.

Gray made 29 appearances in all competitions last season, chipping in with three goals and five assists.

He is a regular with Aidy Boothroyd’s England Under-21 side, having earned 25 further caps since his 2016 debut.

Tottenham’s striker hunt goes on

Tottenham, meanwhile, are looking to bring in another striker to support England captain Harry Kane.

Kane has shown impeccable form alongside winger Son Heung-min so far this season. After notching four assists and four goals respectively on Sunday, the pair both scored in Thursday’s Europa League win.

However, Mourinho is aware of the damage injury – such as Kane’s recent hamstring problem – can cause.
