Woodward has sights set on second Dortmund star’s £68m release clause to complete ambitious ‘Project No. 7’ plans

Manchester United still want to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland as part of the club’s codenamed plans to sign Jadon Sancho, according to a report.

United were in negotiations with RB Salzburg about signing Haaland in December, but a deal failed to materialise. Indeed, the player’s agent, Mino Raiola, played a part in the transfer falling through.

As such, the 20-year-old signed for Dortmund, where he has already scored 23 goals in 26 games.

According to The Athletic, however, Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still plans to sign his fellow Norwegian.

Indeed, the source reports that Haaland has a £68million release clause that will become active in 2022.

But while United could look to snap the striker up in two years’ time, the Old Trafford club have not ruled out making an earlier move for a higher price if his current performances continue.

What’s more, Solskjaer is willing to re-enter negotiations with Raiola, despite the problems last time. United felt the super-agent’s demands at the time were too steep, so withdrew their interest.

Meanwhile, United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward still wants to sign Haaland’s teammate, Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils agreed personal terms with the England winger in the recent transfer window. However, Dortmund’s £108million price tag eventually proved too big a risk for United.

The Athletic adds that Woodward and his fellow officials codenamed the Sancho pursuit as ‘Project No. 7’.

But while Edinson Cavani has taken the number from Alexis Sanchez, Woodward still wants Sancho in at Old Trafford.

Given Haaland’s release clause and Sancho’s valuation, a double swoop could amount to £176million.

Despite United not bringing in Sancho in recent months, they did make changes to their squad.

In midfield, Donny van de Beek arrived for an initial £35million from Ajax. But the 23-year-old has struggled for game time and is yet to make a Premier League start.

As such, Gary Neville claims that Solskjaer will “privately” know his best midfield trio – which does not include the Dutchman.
