Gareth Bale reportedly decided to complete a move to Tottenham after refusing to wait for the outcome of Manchester United’s hunt for Jadon Sancho.
Wales international Bale recently returned to Spurs, seven years after his world-record move to Real Madrid.
However several reports suggested that United had the 31-year-old on their shortlist of transfer options. The Red Devils are after a new winger, with Jadon Sancho a top target.
According to ESPN reporter Mark Ogden, Bale was in active talks about a move to Old Trafford.
However amid Spurs’ offer, he decided to move back to north London rather than wait for the Red Devils’ decision.
“Gareth Bale was on the list. But it was made clear to Bale (by Man Utd) that Sancho is our priority,” Ogden told an ESPN FC podcast. “If we can’t get Sancho you’ll be high on our list.
“I was told that Bale was attracted by the prospect of playing for Man Utd, he actually fancied the move.
“But because he had an offer from Tottenham on the table he felt that, I don’t want to risk the Tottenham move by waiting two weeks for a deal that might never happen.
“He was a player that Man Utd looked at and that’s been confirmed at both ends to me, that Bale was on their list.”
Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, revealed in August how Spurs made the decisive move in securing the winger’s return.
However Bale has not yet made his second debut for the Premier League side. He re-signed while dealing with a knee injury, from which he has not yet recovered.
Man Utd still without a new winger
It is unclear when the talks between Bale and United took place but the Red Devils are still without a new winger.
Borussia Dortmund are standing firm on Sancho’s £108million exit fee, with United now looking at alternatives.
Among them is Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa, although an approach for the Italian has failed.
The Old Trafford club are also in initial talks about a loan deal for Barcelona wide man Ousmane Dembele.
Speaking in Friday’s press conference though, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offered little hope on the prospect of new signings.
